I recently launched a new social network called imyriad that is geared towards expanding your possibilities in business, personal growth, finances, etc. I had posted an announcement and an invite in a entrepreneurial forum that I frequent, and I got a puzzling response from one woman. She said she would definitely check out my site, but that she wondered why in the world I would start my own social network when there are already so many out there. So here is my response to that query:
Somebody opened a coffee shop around the corner from my house. What the... Isn't there a Starbucks on every corner? The last thing we need is another place to pour caffeine down our throats.
And why do people keep opening up restaurants? There are already SO many, we are completely saturated with choices, and so many restaurants can't even make it 6 months.
Why would you go to school and get all your certifications to be an accountant? Is there a shortage I am unaware of?
Why would you design clothing, apparel, and accessories? Go to any store, fashion show, street fair, or ebay. There are so many fashion designers that you can't swing a Fendi purse without knocking over 5 of them. (modified, genius quote from Samantha on Sex and the City.)
But mostly: why oh why would someone on an entrepreneurial site not know the answer to any of these questions??
The answer, of course, is PASSION. Pure and simple. We do what we love regardless of the competition. We do what we love because we don't feel like ourselves when we quit. And we do what we love because nobody else can do it just like we can..
I absolutely love the benefits of social networking, and have wanted to create one that had all the things I liked, but didn't focus on things I felt to be unnecessary. Thus imyriad was born, giving myself and others the opportunity to connect with other people that have goals, aspirations, ideas, or are already there and have passion for fledgling projects and budding entrepreneurs.
So that being said, I definitely received some insight into how crucial passion is in anything we do. Passion is just energy put in focused motion. It can be created simply by focused thoughts repeated over and over for an extended period of time. We all have the potential for great success if we can only learn to control our thoughts and harness that energy towards the direction we want to go.
For good reads, I HIGHLY recommend The Answer, by John Assaraf and Murray Smith. They break down the mental process of accomplishing huge goals into a scientific approach. None of the feel good mumbo jumbo that doesn't have lasting effects. They teach you how to create new subconscious thought processes and belief systems based on new scientific studies on brain function.
